Employees are absent 7.4 days a year
16th January 2009
On average employees are absent from work for 7.4 days a year across
And for 15 per cent of respondents, the average period of absence is 10 days or more.
The survey was done by HR consultancy Mercer, which talked to nearly 800 companies in 24 European countries.
It found that one in five respondents believes that since 2006 the average number of sick days taken per employee had increased, while 12 per cent believed it had decreased.
Some companies have a specific absence management programme, with the most commonly-used element being formal absence policies and procedures.
Others include sick-pay arrangements, case management and occupational health, and return-to-work interviews.
Two significant causes of absence are stress caused by work, and workplace bullying. Pivotal Performance runs a comprehensive three day bullying and stress management course which provides a total stress management solution, aimed at preventing problems before they occur.
